. wayne lapierre, appearing with chris wallace over the weekend, talking about what he believes is the president's stance that he's not being public about. take a listen. >> they leafletted the country with flyers like this, obama's not going to take your gun, obama will protect gun rights, and now he's trying to take away all three. i mean, what they'll do is they'll turn this universal check on the law-abiding into a universal registry of law-abiding people and law-abiding people don't want that. >> sir, it seems to be that wayne lapierre has come out against any type of reform in any general direction that's been discussed so far. when it comes to the second amendment and as someone who has suffered at the hands of an accidental gunshot, what are your feelings about how the left can be better communicating the fact that while support of the second amendment is universal, there needs to be some control of the guns in this country when it comes to the current regulation. >> well, it's interesting because i also saw a clip of mr. wayne lapierre over the weekend where he was spea

leaders on how to curb gun violence. this as nra's chief executive, wayne lapierre, continued his spirited defense of gun rights this weekend. speaking with fox news's chris wallace about that controversial nra ad that brought the president's children into the gun debate. >> the president's kids are safe, and we're all thankful for it. >> they also face a threat that most children do not face. >> tell that to the people of newtown. tell that -- >> you really think that the president's children are the same kind of target as every schoolchild in america? that's ridiculous and you know it, sir. >> you know, unfortunately, i think there are parents all over the school that -- all over the country that think their kids are entitled to the same amount of protection when they go to school. >> so they should have secret service? >> no, but what they should have is police officers or certified armed security in those schools to keep people safe. >> you talk -- one of the points of that ad that i want to ask you about is you made it a class argument. the rich, the elite. >> sure. >> they have bodyg

a super bowl commercial that pointed out the rank hypocrisy of men like the nra's wayne lapierre who at one time was a vocal supporter of background checks. >> we think it's reasonable to provide mandatory, instant criminal background checks for every sale at every gun show, no loopholes anywhere for anyone. >> the nra's most public response to this onslaught of factual statements was on sunday when it trotted out wayne lapierre to yet again repeat the same inaccurate and ill-informed statements to which the president was just referring. >> turn this universal check on the law-abiding into a universal registry of law-abiding people. >> there's no indication -- i understand you're saying that's the threat, but there's nothing that anyone in the administration has said that indicates they're going to have a universal registry. >> and obama care wasn't a tax until they needed it to be a tax, was it? >> it was the supreme court that said that. >> let's get to our panel now. mark glaze is the director of mayors against illegal guns which is responsible for that super bowl ad. and michael

've heard from nra's wayne lapierre that is something that they are not for, in fact the nra has gone so far as to say it's in the in support of any restrictions at all whatsoever on guns. martha,. martha: we know that the president, kelly is going to run into headwinds even with democrats in congress on this issue. what is his plan to try to get it through? >> reporter: i think we are seeing that plan start taking shape today with his trip to minneapolis. the president will likely continue these campaign-style stops at various cities that have been plagued with gun control, minneapolis being one of them and already taking action of course to deal with this gun control problem, the gun violence in that city. the president will continue to push for this. he will not try to introduce any legislation himself, he wants congress to do that e wants congress to step up to the table and go ahead and offer some of its plans that he has in place. the president would like to see congress act or enact a ban on assault weapons, high kpwas te capacity magazines and a universal background check. senate maj

was shot with a bullet after round number 13. >>chris: as you know, wayne lapierre will be on the next segment and he says we had an assault weapons ban for 10 years. it didn't work. >>guest: well, i don't know if it worked or not. i haven't looked at all the statistics. common sense tells me that if it is much more difficult for criminals and the mentally ill to get assault weapons and lie-capacity magazines and guns in general, we will save lives. i served in the military for 25 years. i know the value of having an assault weapon. a gun that can kill many people, many quickly. i do not believe the average person on the shoot including criminals and terrorists should have easy access to those weapons. in cases of mass shootings when an assault weapon has been used we know we typically twice the number are shot so more people are died than injureed. there are already 9,000 federal laws on the books but they are not enforced. >> i agree with mr. lapierre on that point laws that are not enforced. 1.7 million have failed background checks since 1999 and not enough are prosecuted. they sho

, nra president wayne lapierre insisted universal background checks will not work and claimed the president is against the second amendment. >> during the campaign when he said to people i will not take away your rifle, shotgun, hand gun, they leafletted the country with flyers like this, obama's not going to take your gun, obama will protect gun rights, and now he's trying to take away all three. i don't think you can trust -- >> senate majority leader harry reid says he hopes gun legislation will come out of the judiciary committee but he was noncommittal over whether he would sign an assault weapons ban. >> would you vote for it? >> frankly, she knows, i haven't read her amendment, i didn't vote for the assault weapons last time because it didn't make sense but i'll take a look at it. >> i will bring in "washington post" columnist ruth marcus and senior staff writer for "the hill" alex bolton. good monday morning to both of you. ruth, this is the president's first big sell to the american people. what do you think he needs to say here? >> well, the president said he was goi
